About the Dogma Prize

The Dogma Prize was established in 2010 and is funded by the independent Dogma Collection. The Prize occurs every two years, and the Dogma Prize 2023 is the eighth edition.

The purpose of the Prize is to encourage and promote Vietnamese artists, whether resident in Vietnam or overseas, through a focus on Self-portraiture in all disciplines. Self-portraiture has a long and distinguished history throughout human civilization, and involves those practised in self-expression providing their views on themselves, as a metaphor for the cultures and societies in which they live. This is the spirit of the Prize.

As 2023 approaches its end, the tremor of pandemic fades in the rear mirror, only to be replaced by challenge in different garb. This year’s call for the Dogma Prize is of story-telling, of an Assemblage, of our efforts to make sense in a puzzling world, of linkages from past to present, and from the self to the oneness of life. Artists are renowned for their courage in stepping forth to express, comment, and opine; and this year we seek to encourage such dialect, with a focus on the nature of self, or as some would say, the ‘is-ness’ of life.

With the theme “Assemblage: Me, my story & I”, the Dogma Prize is honoured to have a well-rounded panel of jurors consisting of: Artist Dinh Q. Le, Artist Lyno Vuth and Art historian Pamela Nguyen Corey. These appointments highlight the Prize’s recognition of the vast array of artistic practice ranging from experimental to figurative in Vietnamese contemporary art.
